About the Webinar

The return of Emilio Aguinaldo in May 1898 resumed the vigor of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The Filipinos succeeded in taking control of towns in the different parts of the archipelago. Also, during this time, the Revolutionary Government needed to establish a naval force to support the revolutionary efforts from the coast. The lecture aims to trace the events that led to the foundation of the short-lived Revolutionary Navy upon the return of Aguinaldo to the Philippines in 1898. The lecture highlights personages and ships that became integral to our naval force’s history.

About the Speaker

Michael Angelo Cruz is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in History from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 2019. He was a Bambike Ecotours Guide, touring local and foreign tourist with bikes inside the historic district of Intramuros from 2019 to 2021. He is also a part-time instructor teaching subjects like Readings in Philippine History, and the Life and Works of Jose Rizal. He joined the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in 2021 serving as Museum Guide at the Museo ni Jose Rizal – Fort Santiago in Manila and Museo El Deposito in San Juan City. Currently, he is the Officer-In-Charge of the Museum of Philippine Maritime History in Iloilo City.

The Intramuros Learning Sessions (ILS) is the educational webinar series of the Intramuros Administration (IA). The IA is an attached national government agency under the Department of Tourism. 

Topics are interdisciplinary and cover themes related to Intramuros and Manila studies, Philippine studies, as well as cultural heritage studies. Pursuant to IA’s charter, the ILS aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Filipino’s national identity and sense of belonging and pride.
