The Friends of Intramuros in cooperation with the Intramuros Administration organized the second of its lecture series last July 13, 2017 at the Marble of Ayuntamiento de Manila. This time, Dr. Benito J. Legarda Jr., a known writer and historian gave a lecture entitled “Manila: Starting Point of the Modern World/ The Galleon Trade. The lecture series is free and open to the public.

Attended by professionals, students, and history enthusiasts, Dr. Legarda presented to almost a hundred audience the history of the Galleon Trade that put the City of Manila on the map. The Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade that ran from 1565 to 1815 was a ship trade between Manila and Acapulco, Mexico. For 250 years, the ships crossed the Pacific and traded various goods such as spice, cotton, jade, ivory, silk, and gold. The trading resulted to economic benefits and cultural exchange of the two countries.

The lecture series is an initiative of the Friends of Intramuros with an objective to help the community gain more knowledge on their history and heritage. The next lecture will be on August 23 by Prof. Xiao Chua entitled “The Bonifacio Presidency.”
