Intramuros Learning Sessions episode no. 78 – Visibilizing the Invisible: Using Multimedia Sources in Reconstructing Philippine LGBTQIA+ History
Overview:
In line with promoting gender inclusivity in celebrating this year’s Pride month, this webinar highlights the role of multimedia sources in reconstructing Philippine LGBTQIA+ history. The session will begin by mapping the intersections of LGBTQIA+ history, visual culture, and multimedia. These intersections will explain how the textual materials can offer access to past visual cultures, too. Using primary sources, the rest of the session will track the mobilities and shifts in re-presenting LGBTQIA+ desires, practices, and identities from pre-colonial to contemporary Philippine history. Overall the webinar will be guided by these questions: How can we visibilize the LGBTQIA+ in the periods of history without accessible visual resources? Is a visual necessarily an imagery? Can words be “visual”? And, how much of the reconstructable LGBTQIA+ histories and experience can be considered “authentic”?

About the Guest Speaker:
Gio Galiguia is a researcher specializing in Philippine LGBTQI+ History. He is currently an instructor at the Department of History at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and a Senior Research Specialist at the Palacio de Memoria, He has a BA in History from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and an MA in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

The Intramuros Learning Sessions (ILS) is the educational webinar series of the Intramuros Administration (IA). The IA is an attached national government agency under the Department of Tourism.
Topics are interdisciplinary and cover themes related to Intramuros and Manila studies, Philippine studies, as well as cultural heritage studies. Pursuant to IA’s charter, the ILS aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Filipino’s national identity and sense of belonging and pride.
