Overview
The world of Philippine arts and culture was shocked last year on the passing of historian, writer and antiquarian Martin “Sonny” Tinio, Jr. Tinio who served as a consultant for the Intramuros Administration (IA) and the Museo de Malacanang (present-day Presidential Museum and Library), was renowned for his important writings on various subjects on Philippine antiques, furniture and colonial architecture that culminated with his magnum opus, “Philippine Ancestral Houses: 1810-1930” co-authored with fellow historian Dr. Fernando Zialcita published in 1980 that has become the reference in the study of Philippine architecture. But beyond the writings, it is often forgotten that Tinio was a genuine lover of Philippine cuisine. Neither is it often credited, that this genteel farmer from Nueva Ecija dabbled in interior design that spurned the establishment of the Casa Manila Museum and the restoration of important ancestral houses in Kawit, Cavite and Taal, Batangas. One year on from his sudden passing, let us know more about the man behind the sharp intellect by the man they called Sonny, and give due recognition to the “pamana” that he has left to the nation.

About the Speaker: Matthew Lopez
Matthew Lopez is an art researcher, independent curator, art advisor, and author. He has a BA in Political Economy from the University of Asia and the Pacific. Presently, he is a Museum Consultant at the Fundacion Sansó. Previously he has worked as a researcher for the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and served as one of the founding curators of the Manila Biennale in 2018. He has contributed extensively to the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art (2nd Edition) in 2017 and has also contributed to a special edition of the Philippine Panorama.
About the Intramuros Learning Sessions
The Intramuros Learning Sessions (ILS) is the educational webinar series of the Intramuros Administration (IA). The IA is an attached national government agency under the Department of Tourism.
Topics are interdisciplinary and cover themes related to Intramuros and Manila studies, Philippine studies, as well as cultural heritage studies. Pursuant to IA’s charter, the ILS aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Filipino’s national identity and sense of belonging and pride.
