Bitay: Kasaysayan ng Parusang Kamatayan sa Pilipinas

September 28, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In line with the commemoration of Martial Law, Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago will hold a lecture entitled Bitay: Kasaysayan ng Parusang Kamatayan sa Pilipinas on 28 September 2018 at 1:00 PM, museum’s Audio Visual Room. This lecture will provide an overview on the history of death penalty in the Philippines highlighting the execution methods used (e.g. garrotte, firing squad, public hanging) as imposed by law on illustrious Filipinos such as secular priests Gomez, Burgos and Zamora, Dr. Jose Rizal and Macario Sakay. The lecture shall be correlated to the imposition of death penalty through laws and decrees during the Marcos period and the notion of ‘deterrence’ as justification for its imposition. The lecture is deemed timely since the question of restoring death penalty in the country is once again being raised.
